Some Research Questions on Economics

Here are a few questions one is likely to encounter on an oral examination for a masters in economics. 

  1. The Ricardian model and Hechscher-Ohlin model both talk about comparative advantages as being the sources of gains from free trade. What are the differences and commonalities between these two models in terms of the sources of comparative advantages? In other words, compare and contrast these two models.

  2. Show that for a small country, an import tariff will lower the domestic welfare without any effect on the rest of the world. However, for a large country, an import tariff could in fact benefit the home country at the expense of the rest of the world.
