The most important, and populous territorial empire in world history; at its peak, almost one quarter of the human race was nominally subject to the British Crown. The British Colonial Empire was a military and diplomatic achievement of the United Kingdom, with some of the groundwork laid by the old Kingdom of England. By far the main component of the empire was India.
