A region of Asia that includes Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan; and, historically, large regions of China, including the western autonomous regions: Xinjiang Uyghur, Xixang, Ningxia Hui, Nei Monggol, and inner (western) Manchuria.

This region, sparsely populated, separates the major population centers of Eastern Europe from those of East Asia and Southern Asia. At several periods, movements of people from, or out of, this region has culminated in traumatic conquests, such as those of Genghis Khan and Timur-e-Lang.
