Cult of Optimism

From Hobson's Choice

Jump to: navigation, search

A pathology of bureaucracies in which skepticism about success is regarded as disloyal.

Exposition

Frequently the cult of optimism is regarded as merely an idiosyncrasy of "groupthink"; the term "cult" implies an institution devoted to optimism, but the vehement hostility to nonbelievers, the self-imposed isolation from alternative ways of thinking, and the disregard for normative goals are characteristic of cults. Typically, cults incorporate a sense that "the worse things get, the better" because of the psychological need for validation on the part of participants.
