North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Created as an alliance of Western nations against the (unnamed) risk of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe.

Member States
NATO membership includes both treaty obligation to the other members, and also inclusion in a unified command structure. No member state has ever withdrawn from the NATO charter, but two have withdrawn from the unified command structure, and two have no armed forces.
