The nation-state is a melding of the concepts of nation and state. The term "nation" historically includes the sense of "ethnicity" as an organizing principle.


The nation-state exists to provide sovereignty for a nationality. It is today used to refer to any sovereign power, despite the incomparability of many existing nations and their states to the idea.
