Rexism

From Hobson's Choice

Jump to: navigation, search

A type of dictatorial state in which the king rules as a bona fide dictator with a cult of personality. Rexism is difficult to achieve because the inherently conservative nature of monarchist movements clashes with the radical character of totalitarianism.

In Belgium

The term "Rexism" is nearly always identified with Leon Degrelle, a Belgian who founded the Rexist Party. The Rexists were explicitly pro-Nazi and collaborated enthusiastically with the Nazi occupation during World War II. The name derived from the Latin slogan Christus Rex, "Christ the King," which was also the title of a conservative Roman Catholic journal. The ideology of Rexism called for the moral renewal of Belgian society in conformity with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, by forming a corporatist society, and abolishing democracy.
