A region of Asia that historically has had intermittent contact with the nations of Europe and with the nations of East Asia. It has a very broad range of climates and cultures, especially given the small size of the region. Since the 13th century it has been governed mostly by Islamic governments, and since the 18th century mostly by the United Kingdom. For the most part, its economy has been highly integrated into the global marketplace.
This site distinguishes between South Asia and Southern Asia, which includes South Asia, Southwest Asia (and the Arabian Peninsula), Southeast Asia, and the Malay Archipelago.
