For this site, the southern half of Asia. This is the region, along with Africa, where most Western European imperialism has been directed.
South Asia is home to roughly 2.3 billion people; about two-thirds of them live in the former British India, while 10% live in the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). South Asia is, with some significant exceptions, a maritime civilization unified by millennia of long-distance commerce.
