A region of Africa and Asia with a strongly integrated history. For the last thirteen centuries, the prevailing religion in this region is Islam. For our purposes, it includes the region of Africa north of the Sahel and the Horn (i.e., Somalia and Ethiopia); and the region of Asia south of Turkey, the CIS (i.e., the Sea of Caspian), and west of Pakistan.

This region has been known to Europeans for centuries as the "Near East" and the "Middle East", or the "Orient" (hence, "Orientalism"). It is founded by the Sahara, the Greater Caucasus, and the Hindu Kush Mountains, and has been a region contested by imperial powers for at least three millenia.
