Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, also known as the Soviet Union. A federal union created in 1922 from the Soviet republics of Byelorussia, Ukraine, Russia, and the Transcaucasian Federation. Prior to 30 December 1922, the Bolshevik state was known as the Russian Socialist Federated Soviet Republics (RSFSR). Most histories of the USSR treat it as a prolongation of the Russian Empire under Jacobinist control.
