United Arab Emirates
From Hobson's Choice
A loose federation of seven emirates (states ruled by a tribal monarch).
- Abu Dhabi
- Ajman
- Dubai (Dubayy)
- Fujairah (al-Fujayrah)
- Ras al-Khaima (Ras al-Khayma)
- Sharja (Sharjah)
- Umm al Quwain (Umm al Qaywayn)
The UAE's central government is responsible solely for defense of the federation and for administration of its foreign policy. While it has an enormous ratio of oil rents to national population, some members (most notably Dubai) have adopted extreme laissez-faire economic policies to sustain affluence as an entrepot.
