Warsaw Pact
From Hobson's Choice
Formally, the Warsaw Treaty Organization; created by treaty, 14 May 1955. Members included:
- the USSR
- Albania (withdrew, 1961)
- Bulgaria
- Czechoslovakia
- German Democratic Republic
- Hungary

The Warsaw Pact was formed as the Communist counterweight to NATO. Like NATO, it had both a treaty (of mutual strategic assistance) and a command structure. Warsaw Pact military equipment was also highly standardized.
It was dissolved in January 1990.
