Initial Formation
The Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes was created by awarding the Kingdom of Serbia territories formerly controlled by the Central Powers: Slovenia (the former Austrian Province of Carniola), Croatia (an Hungarian territory), and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which had only recently been annexed by the Austrian government after 32 years of occupation.
In 1927, the King staged a coup d'etat and ruled as a dictator; the constituent territories were reorganized as provinces, not autonomous polities as before, and the name of the kingdom changed to Yugoslavia.
