A region of Africa that is understood to include nations bordering on the Mediterranean Sea, including Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Egypt; and countries of the Greater Sudan: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Sudan. Nearly the entire population of this region is Muslim.
